HMS Jupiter (1895)
HMS Jupiter (1895) hoisting in torpedo netting.
A view of pre-Dreadnought battleship HMS Jupiter [one of the Majestic Class Battleships] bringing in their torpedo nets. The Royal Navy used the netting as a defensive device against torpedoes from around 1890, when torpedoes were becoming a more advanced threat within naval combat. They made the nets from rings of galvanised iron and suspended them around the sides of the ship below the waterline in order to protect the ship's hull. The navy used torpedo nets until the after the Battle of Jutland (1916) when nets damaged due to naval gunfire got tangled in the propellers of ships. The Class introduced a new main armament - the 12-inch gun. There were other changes made to the design and operation of the main armament which made this a significant class of British Battleship.
